Shipment Planning, Capacity Contracting, and Revenue Management in the Air Cargo Industry: A Literature Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
A wide variety of goods nowadays is transported by air, especially those of high value-to-weight ratio such as electronics and luxury goods and those perishable such as cut flowers and fish. The contemporary logistics practices that require shipping more frequently with smaller quantities also favor air transport. However, decision-making in air cargo business is challenging. Air cargo demand is highly unstable and sensitive to global economic conditions. The shipping process typically involves many parties, such as carriers, forwarders, trucking companies, and terminals; poor coordination between them might cause considerable delay. Furthermore, the special characteristics such as demand imbalance and capacity 2-dimensinality also raise issues in both strategic and operational decisionmaking. Due to such challenges, practitioners and academic researcher have begun to apply operations research/management science (OR/MS) to the air cargo industry in recent years. In this paper, we review academic papers in three categories, namely, shipment planning, capacity contracting/booking, and revenue management. Other related literature and some possible future research directions are also discussed.

This paper focuses on formulating capacity-price trade off problem in Yield Management for manufactur-ing industry by drawing motivation from the remarkable success of Yield Management (YM) implementation in airlines. In the current practice, there is no alternative and procedure for the manufacturer, as well as cus-tomers to take advantage of using the unfulfilled capacity in discounted offers...
متن کاملRailway Revenue Management: Overview and Models
The railway industry offers similar revenue management opportunities to those found in the airline industry. The railway industry caters for the delivery and management of cargo as well as the transport of passengers. Unlike the airline industry, the railway industry has seen relatively little attention to revenue management problems. We provide an overview of the published literature for both ...
متن کاملAIRLINE STOCHASTIC CAPACITY ALLOCATION BY APPLYING REVENUE MANAGEMENT
To formulate a single-leg seat inventory control problem in an airline ticket sales system, the concept and techniques of revenue management are applied in this research. In this model, it is assumed the cabin capacity is stochastic and hence its exact size cannot be forecasted in advance, at the time of planning. There are two groups of early-reserving and late-purchasing customers demanding t...
متن کاملRevenue Management and Capacity Planning
Broadly defined, revenue management (RM) is the process of maximizing revenue from a fixed amount of perishable inventory using “market segmentation” and “demand management” techniques. While RM is not new (in fact it is as old as commerce, e.g., haggling in a market can be considered a form of RM), the theory and practice of RM have seen significant scientific and practical advances in the las...
